Can anyone tell me what is a good bipod for the M1A. I purchased a USGI M2 Bipod that mounts on the gas port, and was told that hanginging the bipod from the gas port will deplete from accuracy. Its better to find a bipod that mounts from the rifle. Is that correct? Also, what is the new bipod that the military uses in Afghanistan?
Thanks- Martin Kaufman

Harris Bipods are the ones I see most recommenced but honestly I have yet to even attempt this, right now I am still shopping around and its been a pain. I would really love to order from a local dealer but I am forced now to find one online and somewhere "kind of close" to where I reside. Let me know what you find out though!

From my experiences with my M2 there is no accuracy problem. I think you should exercise caution on how tight you make it on the gas cylinder. Too tight could concieveably cause failure of the gas piston to function. I would not bother with the bipod unless I was in a dedicated fixed position. On the move I would always use the sling instead.

There is a special adapter available for M1a/M14's. I looked for that adapter online and found it but it was rediculously expensive. So I actually found a generic set of front sling swivel replacements designed for a bolt action rifle.(I think it was at Wal-Mart). They weren't expensive so I purchased it hoping it would work, lol. I removed the front sling swivel on my SOCOM 16, and sure enough, the replacement swivel's thread matched. I did have to cut it down some cuz it was just about an 1/8 of an inch too long. It was rubbing on the Piston. So I cut it and added a nylon washer, and its worked like a charm since…my harris Bi-pod fits like a glove and makes shooting so much more comfortable. No more fumbling with have-ass sand bags at the range.

BIPOD attached…

I recently had Springfield install a QD swivel stud on my MIA to mount my bi-pod since they said it was guranteed for life in the event the stock split or was damaged due to recoil. My issue is they removed the existing sling swivel to "bed" in the stud. I have mounted the bi-pod and am now in search of a standared swivel to fit the bi-pod that will accept the Springield sling which is 1 3/8" wide. All the sling adapters I have found so far are 1 1/4" wide. Please advise!!

A S/A rep advised the same but unless it's in another area of their site other than swivels, I didn't see it. They had everything from 1-1 1/4" but no 1 1/2". If it is listed and I missed it….my apologies.

I have the traditional walnut stock and the front sling point is riveted to the stock, so unless I drill those out I could not use the particular hole in your stock that you used. Also the walnut stock doesn't have threaded fittings like yours. I see on your stock you have a non-threaded hole in front of where your sling was…could that hole be used to mount a bipod stud?

I would humbly suggest to first install the mount that I think TRGGRPULLR was talking about that was "ridiculously expensive", (it is admittedly a little pricey but Sadlak products are really good in my opinion, and TRGGRPULLR is obviously way more handy than I at mods seeing he made his own), the Sadlak Front QD Mount, or the better Sadlak Front Rail Mount HD. They are solid, with a wide mounting surface, there are two bolts/nuts to hold it instead of one, and I feel quality is worth the money. Then get a Harris S-BR 6" to 9" bipod. I have 3 of them and I like them. I am always looking for something more hardcore, so I am looking at the GG & G Extreme Duty Tactical bipod to put on my project M1A rifle I am almost done with.

I've been considering the Sadlak Front rail HD mount and have read the instructions on their website. They said that it might take a "little" work to get it to fit right…. How much work would it really take to get it to fit on my Scout?

Once the stock sling swivel is removed the area that is cut down where it was will probably need to be opened up a little more to make it fit. Then the mounting hardware will need a little counter sink on the inside of the stock.

If you're handy try to do it yourself, if you are unsure, send it out to someone reputable.
