I can shoot 2000 yards with my M1A Loaded National Match….I just don’t have a prayer of actually hitting a target….but the boat tail hollow point will fly that far….I should really invest in a scope….any recommendations? They say that a scope should cost almost if not more than the rifle….I hope not more than this rifle….

What are you looking to do with the scope? Target or hunting? If hunting will you be in a lot of vegitation or open areas? I think a variable power scope usually does best. If you are looking to invest some big $$ in a scope, I would read this review on the Leupold Mark 4.

Hello, M1A Loaded or National Match?

  4. Nash says:

depends on what you are wanting to do. The national Match has a glass lined barrel that has to be changed every 2500 rounds. the loaded has all the same internal parts but the only difference is the synthetic stock and the glass lined barrel. I would go with the loaded personaly, you have the option to compete and a good rifle just to take home and to some shooting.

  5. Nashlet says:

Its called a glass BEDDED BARREL.

I recently purchased a new M1A for the first time and I am absolutely in love with it! It is the best piece of firearm eqpt. I have ever owned.

After qualifying for the post rifle (M14)team back in the late eighties, I bought a M1A Loaded for my personal use. Shooting 800, 900 or 1,000 meters is not a problem with correct ammo. Your 172 and heavier bullets will stay supersonic at those distances and give good accuracy. Lighter bullets loose velocity quicker than heavier bullets. When a rifle bullet’s velocity drops below the sound barrier, the bullet becomes unstable and accuracy degrades.
More people have trouble with sight adjustments. At 1,000 meters, your rear National Match Sight may be 50 clicks up from your mechanical zero when a standard height National Match Front Sight Is used. A simple solution is to get a second front sight unit and shorten the blade to work with your load with say 5 or six clicks up at 800 meters. Then dial in your changes for 900 and 1000.
With a scope setup, your mount is the key. It helps to have enough adjustment range within your scope. Hope this helps.

My grandfather shot on the national rifle team in the 1970’s. He rated the rifles like this, 1 springfield 1903 for accuracy and distance. 2000 yards 2 m1 garand for simplicity and accuracy out to 1000 yards. 3 the m14 out to 1000 yards. do to weight and balance. all of the above rifles were set for national matches with iron sights.
